Honourable Mention: “Organic Growth” by Team WWP, Shenzhen, China

Comments by the Jury - Team WWP’s “Organic Growth” focuses on organic growth of a slum settlement in Mumbai and maps the various interactions of its residents with the built form and the community. The proposal keeps the resident’s behavioural needs and aspirations at the centre and encourages them to build their own future space, while the remaining space becomes a public space for interaction and community living. This organically developed space leaves more area for flexible, organic growth in the housing configuration. The process of mapping and extensive detailing of several permutations of floor plans and section makes this proposal worthy of an honourable mention.

Project Description

When a residential building can develop organically and form a virtuous circle, it can become a harmonious and livable community with low cost. Respect for people’s behavioral needs is what we care about most. We hope that design can meet people’s behavioral needs and guide people’s behavior to a better development. Different living units are built flexibly under the organic organization, which can be deleted or superimposed. We encourage future residents to build their own structures according to their needs. The space between the units can be left as a public activity space for viewing and ventilation. This is a flexible, organic growth housing design that leaves room for future development and growth.
